Why?
One billion and 400 million people continue to live in extreme poverty. The mere idea of 1.4 billion impoverished people can seem like an insurmountable situation. It is not. Significant progress has been made already but more needs to be done to achieve the Eight Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
The Global Poverty Project is the vision of Hugh Evans and Simon Moss, both of whom were intimately involved in the Australian MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY campaign. These two campaigners are committed to ending extreme poverty, and believe that citizens from around the world can make this vision a reality.
Truth be told, Hugh and Simon have been inspired by a lot people, events and organizations themselves. The Global Poverty Project seeks to build on these foundations and strengthen the momentum built by current initiatives and past successes. The goal is to arm individuals with the tools, knowledge and inspiration needed to take action to end extreme poverty.
How?
The Global Poverty Project team is creating a slideshow presentation and film that will communicate the realities of extreme poverty and what can be done about it by everyday people around the world.
The slideshow presentation and the film will work in tandem with, and leverage, the current momentum in civil society campaigns on extreme poverty. To make sure that we get it right, we are working in close collaboration with NGOs, government, multilateral agencies, academics and civil society in the research phase of the project. (Click here to learn more about who we're working with.)
The tools produced will educate and serve as a catalyst to tackle extreme poverty and achieve the Millennium Development Goals. The Global Poverty Project will do so by reaching out to people in their communities with presentations or viewings of the film, in doing so reframing the media debate on poverty.
We've set our goals high, but we believe in the project and the potential outcome. Across the globe we will:
- Reach 50,000,000+ people through media and publicity, raising awareness of extreme poverty
- Educate 200,000+ people through live presentations, deepening and reframing their view of extreme poverty
- Engage 50,000+ citizens globally to take direct action on extreme poverty
